What is Gingivitis?

Gingivitis is a common form of gum disease that is characterised by inflammation of the gums. It is caused by the build-up of plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that forms on the teeth. If left untreated, Gingivitis can progress to a more severe form of gum disease called Periodontitis, which can lead to tooth loss and other serious health problems.

What causes Gingivitis?

Gingivitis is often the result of poor oral hygiene. Plaque can build up on the teeth when they are not brushed and flossed regularly, allowing bacteria to grow and irritate the gums. Other factors that can contribute to Gingivitis include smoking, hormonal changes, certain medications, and chronic illnesses such as diabetes.

The early symptoms of Gingivitis include red, swollen, and tender gums that bleed easily, especially when brushing or flossing. Some people also experience bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth. These symptoms can be mild and may not be noticeable at first, which is why it is important to see a Dentist regularly for check-ups and dental cleanings.

How do you treat Gingivitis?

Treating Gingivitis is relatively simple and can usually be done through good oral hygiene and professional cleanings. This involves brushing the teeth at least twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, and flossing daily to remove plaque from between the teeth and along the gum line. It is also important to see a Dentist for regular scale and polish / cleanings, which can remove plaque and tartar that have built up on the teeth.

In addition to good oral hygiene, there are other ways to prevent Gingivitis. Quitting smoking, controlling chronic conditions such as diabetes, and avoiding sugary and starchy foods can all help to reduce the risk of gum disease. It is also important to see a Dentist regularly for check-ups and hygiene visits, so that any early signs of gingivitis can be detected and treated before they progress to a more serious form of gum disease.
